Why We Love Bees?

Awesome Bee FAQs

Almost 90{108de2fb20df9bc01b6d4e0d7c932521e26e0bbb92cc40014fcd88944624c101} of wild plants and 75{108de2fb20df9bc01b6d4e0d7c932521e26e0bbb92cc40014fcd88944624c101} of leading global crops depend on animal pollination. One out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators such as bees. Crops that depend on pollination are five times more valuable than those that do not.

Bees are beneficial insects that pollinate flowering plants by transferring pollen from one flower to another. This is
important for plant reproduction and food production. In
fact, pollinators are responsible for 1 out of every 3 bites of
food you take. While the honey bee gets most of the credit
for providing pollination, there are actually about 500 bee
species in Ohio!

Light to dark brown body with pale and dark hairs in
bands on abdomen. Pollen basket present. Abdomen
barrel‐shaped. Head heart‐shaped.

Black body, extensively covered with black and
yellow hairs on all body segments. Pollen basket
present. Robust body. Long face.

All bees have three body segments, a head, thorax, and abdomen. The head is where large multi‐faceted
eyes, long slender antennae, and cutting mouthparts are found. The thorax is the middle segment where the wings and legs attach. Last is the abdomen, which for female bees ends in a sting.

A honey bee can fly up to 15 miles per hour. A honey bee worker only makes an average of 1/12 of a teaspoon in her lifetime. One ounce of honey would fuel a bees flight around the world. A pound honey is made by 2 million flower visits.

The queen may lay 600-800 or even 1,500 eggs each day during her 3 or 4 year lifetime. This daily egg production may equal her own weight. She is constantly fed and groomed by attendant worker bees
